SSA-44: lower Medicare premiums after a life-changing event
If a life-changing event lowered your income after the tax year SSA used for IRMAA, you do not have to wait two years. Form SSA-44 asks Social Security to recalculate premiums using a more recent year. Official instructions and form: ssa.gov/medicare/lower-irmaa.
When SSA-44 matters
The two-year lookback is fair when income is stable. It is painful when:
- You retired and wages disappeared after the lookback year
- A spouse died and household income dropped
- You divorced or stopped working
- Other listed events on SSA-44 reduced MAGI
SSA publishes the current list of qualifying events on the official page above. The free check result includes the official SSA-44 link. Retirement Tax Radar does not file the form for you.
What SSA-44 is not
- Not a way to avoid IRMAA if income is still high
- Not retroactive forever — SSA uses rules on the form for which year applies
- Not a substitute for correcting a wrong return with the IRS
What to do
- Confirm which year's MAGI SSA used (on your IRMAA notice).
- Compare to current-year income after the event.
- Download SSA-44 and follow SSA's instructions.
- Keep copies of the notice, tax returns, and proof of the event.
